Prairie South School Division celebrated Education week with a free lunch for bus drivers in Moose Jaw and surrounding areas Friday afternoon.

The annual bus driver celebration receives support from Moose Jaw's Warner Industries, who sell the Thomas line of buses to PSSD.  Greg Donald is in charge of Warner's Saskatchewan sales and said this is the 7th year they've supplied and cooked the hamburger lunch for the drivers.  Donald said "(I) enjoy the business of interacting with people and putting out the best product there is to protect the precious cargo (school children) that we carry". PSSDBusDriversLunchThe PSSD bus drivers enjoyed their appreciation lunch Friday afternoon

Tony Baldwin Director of Education for Prairie South, says approximately 150 drivers between Moose Jaw and Assiniboia, who celebrated the day before, were given a day of praise that they deserve.

"We (in Moose Jaw alone ) drive 34,000 kilometers (KMs) a day with school buses, so they are working hard because it doesn't take long for these guys to rack up some miles."

Baldwin explains that one driver, Ross Whitney who drives for Chaplin school, drives over 210km per day, which has added up to about 1.6 million KMs over his 40-year career.

Whitney started driving a school bus 40 years ago taking over the route for a family member and says the best part about his job is the relationships he gets to enjoy between the children and their parents.

Whitney was honoured with a personalized Saskatchewan Roughriders jersey displaying the number of years of service as well as his name on the back.

Whitney says his biggest obstacle is weather and road conditions but the respect he receives from the children taking the bus everyday makes it all worth it through the years of service he has given. With three years left on his bus driving license he is excited to see if he will still be driving in 2018 but has explained he is going to take it "a year at a time".

What started as a side project for one of the members of Great Big Sea has turned into a feature film. Murray Foster of the Canadian celtic/pop band has written and directed a movie called "Cocksure Lads" about a fictitious British band.

Foster says the idea for the movie came from his love of 60's British pop music, which resulted in actually recording music as the fake band.

"We went into the studio and recorded the Great Hits of the Cocksure Lads, a fictitious band, and after that I said we should make a movie about this. We had the music, the characters and we knew the band history. About 4 years ago I started writing the screenplay."

There's a local connection to the movie as well, Tamara Doerksen is the Executive Producer of the movie and is originally from Eyebrow, Saskatchewan.

Foster says Tamara's help securing financing for the film was a difference-maker.

"I realized that she was someone who totally had her act together. I asked her out for coffee and asked if she wanted to run the fundraising for the movie and she grabbed it with both hands. Basically a year after that meeting we were shooting the movie. There would be no movie without Tamara."

Doerksen will be in attendance when the movie is played at the Moose Jaw public library tomorrow night at 7.  She'll also host a question and answer session following the film.

We are now into the fall hunting season in Saskatchewan. People from outside of the province and country will be coming to the province will be coming into the province to hunt for different birds and animals.

With that, Director of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, Darrell Crabbe says that you need to know the rules if you come here to hunt, or you could face a penalty.

"The biggest deterrent is the level of fines being used against those people not following our rules. When somebody poaches an animal and it becomes a financial burden on them, they sure think twice about it."

Crabbe spoke about some of the advantages of hunting in Saskatchewan.

"There's lots of pristine forests out there, park lands, prairies and everything. Our wildlife numbers are quite high and that's something you don't see everywhere across the world, so we're lucky to get to live here."

It happens every so often with Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day and it happened this year.  A potentially unstable chemical that gets set on the counter.

Moose Jaw emergency crews had to deal with that situation this weekend when a container of Crystallized Organic Peroxide was brought in to the city complex on Saturday.  Staff quickly realized what they were dealing with and called the professionals.

Since the compound was susceptible to shock, the RCMP Bomb Disposal Unit from Regina was called and they detonated the container safely.

Organic peroxide is part of a family of chemical compounds that were often used as bleaching agent or weed killer.  In small amounts and stored properly, they are usually safe but as they get older and if the container becomes damaged they can decompose which can lead to fires or explosions.

Moose Jaw's Heartland Hospice continues to take baby steps, working towards their goal of creating an end of life care home in Moose Jaw.

The group recently held their annual general meeting, and Director of Networking Amy Gieni says they are moving in the right direction.

"We were really excited to celebrate our successes. We're on our way to achieving charitable status, which is something we celebrated. We're excited about all those who have supported us financially, we haven't asked for these donations, but we're very appreciative for them."

She spoke about a support group that they want to create for the hospice, to support those suffering from life-limiting illnesses.

"We want to talk to people and get information from people who are suffering form life-limiting illnesses. We found a need in the palliative care team, we had an individual approach us and ask how we could help her facilitate a group and get the contact information. There are lots of stories of people wanting to speak with others who are suffering from these life-limiting illnesses."

Looking towards the future, the hospice would like to have a building of their own to work in, but Gieni recognizes that it could take a while.

"That is the goal, but it may take between 20 and 25 years, because we're dealing with health care. For the time being, we're happy to help however we can."
